TWHS Winter Guard wins National Championship
The Woodlands HS Winter
Guard was crowned National Champions April 17th in San Diego at the Winter Guard
International (WGI) Sport of the Arts World Championships. The
guard's presentation, titled “Woodlands Party of Two,” featured the group in an
Italian restaurant setting, complete with thematical costumes, tables & chairs,
flags and props to help portray the theme. The group scored a 98.35 in the
finals competition to edge out contenders Stoneman Douglas HS from Florida and
Laurens HS from New York.
This years World
Championship was the culmination of 28 regional competitions held throughout the
US and Europe. The event featured over 400 groups from the United States,
Canada, Great Britain, and Japan. The Woodlands score was the 2nd highest score
out of all the groups competing, second only to 7-time World Class Champion,
James Logan HS from California. This is the first time that a Texas HS group
has won a winter guard title. For more information about the event, visit:

The Woodlands HS winter
guards had a successful competition season, with the varsity guard also winning
WGI Dallas regional, the WGI Houston Regional, and the Texas Color Guard Circuit
championships. The JV guard also had a successful season, placing in the finals
competition at both regional championships, and maintained a top 30 national
ranking prior to the national championships.
Chad Berkstresser is the color guard director
and Alan Mueggenborg is the Visual Coordinator for the TWHS band. Other
assistants include Jack Pursifull, Laura Starzyk, Tom Harrington and Lynn Barth.
Brett Johnson is the TWHS band director and the principals are Mark Murrell and
Gregg Colschen.
The Woodlands HS band will be attending the
Bands of America Grand National Championships on November 4-6, 2004, held in the
RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana.
